Ready for a new dental experience?

What to Expect at Your New Patient Dental Examination

Welcome to Creative Smiles in Vancouver, WA! We are thrilled you are considering our practice for your family’s dental needs. Dr. Carl Futenma adheres to a patient-centric philosophy with a focus on comprehensive treatment. Therefore, it is important for us to become familiar with your dental history and your overall goals for optimal oral health. Your first visit to our office will include a new patient dental examination. We have compiled this information so you will be well-informed and prepared for your first appointment.

What to Bring to Your First Dental Visit

When you arrive for your first appointment, you will be asked to complete our new patient information packet. This material will provide us with helpful information regarding your medical history, dental concerns, and any current problems.

We request that you bring along your dental insurance card so our financial team will be equipped to file paperwork for you. A complete list of any medications or supplements you are currently taking will be extremely helpful, as well. If you have had recent dental x-rays taken, please inform us ahead of time so our team can obtain them before your appointment.

Medical History Review

Once we have checked you in, a team member will escort you to one of our comfortable treatment rooms. Dr. Futenma will take time to get to know you as an individual, and to familiarize himself with your unique needs and goals. He will also review your medical history in detail to determine if there are any dental-related factors or contraindications to treatment.

New Patient Dental Examination

During your initial consultation, Dr. Futenma will perform a thorough oral examination to assess the teeth, gums, jaw joints, and surrounding structures. To identify any bone loss, periodontal charting will be performed to measure the pockets around the teeth. Your gums play a vital role in keeping your teeth, so this is an important step.

An oral cancer screening will also be conducted. Because the key to oral cancer is early detection, a screening will be performed at every routine dental visit. This is a simple and straightforward process which can be completed in a matter of minutes.

Diagnostic Imaging: X-rays and Photographs

Any necessary x-rays or photographs will be taken using our advanced diagnostic technology. X-rays are especially important so Dr. Futenma can evaluate the health of the underlying jawbone and detect any developing cavities.

Personalized Treatment Planning for Comprehensive Care

After all important information has been gathered, Dr. Futenma will sit down with you and discuss your treatment options. Because each patient is unique, treatment can vary significantly depending on the needs and goals of every individual. Dr. Futenma is a proponent of comprehensive dentistry, which focuses on oral-systemic health, function, and aesthetics. Together, you and he will discuss a treatment option to address your cosmetic goals while also providing long-term oral health.

Part of your oral health regimen will include routine dental cleanings. During your initial visit, Dr. Futenma will help you determine a cleaning schedule that will meet your specific dental needs. While many of our patients receive cleanings every six months, some require more frequent visits if they are prone to tooth decay or gum disease.
